I have officially found the weirdest way of getting catharsis for my frustrations: by threatening my OC by making him go get bacon in attempt to get out of a conversation with his best friend from twenty years ago!

I originally was going to have a whole side(?) plot in Spring between when Maya sees her former kidnapper and his kids, whom she befriended during her time there, and when she goes and basically kidnaps them herself by holding her kidnapper at gunpoint to give them a chance to escape with her because both of them want him to not do exactly what he says he’s doing for them. One of the key chapters in that subplot was when Maya visits an assassin’s ball put on by Mr. Bennett, which she narrowly escapes from.

And then like two days ago my brain was just like “She should take them with her as she escapes.” And that not only sped up that part, which was necessary as it was pretty late in the story to be doing stuff like that, and it solved the plot problem of “if given the chance, Maya absolutely would’ve shot that guy and none of the rest of the plot would be necessary”. So yeah

I love that writing feeling where a story starts going in a very different direction than the one you initially intended, but somehow this new direction actually achieves your desired goals way better than the original plan would have done.

Spencer offered her a beer or something first. It was practically policy, with jobs like theirs. Murder wasn’t easy, and it always helped him take the edge off the horror of it.

But Vega shook her head. “Just water’s fine.”

He filled up a glass, and handed it to her as he sat down next to her. “What happened?”

Vega hesitated. “There was a shooting upstairs from the daycare. I ended it. But they let out early, so I figured I’d bring him home for you and save you the gas.”

He was stunned. “Thank you.”

“Of course.”

“Are you alright? You look a little worse than normal.”

She nodded, turning her arms over to stare at the patterns of bruises on her skin. “Fine. Just a bit slow today.”

“Do you need any first-aid things? We have bandages and things.”

Vega smiled, but shook her head. “Thanks. I already treated the cuts, and there’s nothing really you can do with bruises.”

The boy, Mason, ran out of the living room and into the kitchen, babbling excitedly about wanting to show his dad something. Spencer smiled and nodded, but practically pushed him back to his mother, who was sitting on the couch in the other room, and waved at them when she saw them looking at her. Mason seemed to get the idea and quickly wandered back, giggling.

Vega smiled as she watched the boy disappear behind the couch. “Mrs. Bennett pregnant again?”

Spencer smiled. “Six months.”

“Oh, wow, has it really been that long since I visited? I need to come around more often.” She frowned, then shrugged off whatever thoughts were in her head. “Tell me how it goes, will you? I want to be ready when it’s my turn.”

He blinked, taking in what she said. “You’re pregnant?”

Vega blushed. “Yeah. About seven weeks.”

“Who’s the lucky guy? Or— girl? Do you even…like people?”

She laughed. “I do not. The father is… not going to be around.”

“Did you—” He caught himself before he finished the sentence.

“No. …I blanked and… well…” She went red and turned away. “All I know is whatever it was, it wasn’t a person.”

“Oh. I’m sorry.”

She shrugged. “I’m okay. But, actually, because of this development—”

“You’re keeping it?”

“Yes? Why would I tell you about this if I weren’t planning to keep it?”

“Why?”

“Because. Now, because of this development, I plan to start up a company of hitmen, allowing me to take a managerial position so that I am no longer regularly putting myself in danger. I came mainly to offer you a position there. You have children of your own, so presumably you and I would have roughly the same job, if you would like. You may also be a field agent if you would prefer.” She put her hand out in a halfhearted offering, before turning it to shake if he wanted.

Spencer thought about it, then shook his head. “Thanks, but I can already see the arguments we’d constantly be in. We’d shatter the place before you could get it off the ground. Good luck, though. Seems like a smart plan.”

Vega smiled. “I should hope so. I planned it.” She stood up, stretched, and smiled. “Well, in that case, I must be going. I’ll see you soon, I hope.” Then she started for the door.

Spencer nodded and waved. “May it be at a funeral not for us,” he replied, as they always did. Then he smirked, and added “Or a baby shower.”

“Oh, yes. I expect an invite. I’ll be there when I do get it. Consider this my RSVP.”

They both looked at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing. Vega nodded and headed for the door, waving, still laughing too much to say anything. And then she was gone, as simple as that.

You get a knock. You open the door to see your nemesis, bruised and beaten, with your child. “Just saved their life. Need to go home and rest.” Your nemesis turns to leave. You grab their arm. “Hang on. I want you to tell me what happened.” You drag them inside.
